Clay City  is the publication from the Artist in Residence period of Alexander Brodsky at the Academy of Architecture. This publication reflects and looks back on the Winter School 2019. The design was made by Haller Brun, in collaboration with editor Jeanne Tan.

The Academy of Architecture invited the Russian architect and artist Alexander Brodsky to be Artist in Residence (AiR) for the 2018-2019 academic year. On the initiative of the head of Architecture Jan-Richard Kikkert, Brodsky was asked to inspire students with his artistic architectural designs and artworks during the Winter School 2019. During this two-week long research and design programme, the three disciplines of Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Architecture, represented by first, second and third-year students, collaborated on the building of a city made from clay in the courtyard of the Academy at the Waterlooplein.

The Academy has invited a new Artist in Residence for the 2019-2020 academic year. This Artist in Residence will be responsible for the content of the Winter School 2020. In order to enable our students to experience the Winter School without any prior knowledge, we will announce our new Artist in Residence during the kick-off on 10 January 2020. This will be the 15th Artist in Residence that we have been able to welcome thanks to the Artist in Residence programme of the Amsterdam University of the Arts. In recent years, surprising and high-profile projects and lecture series have been realised under the guidance of Artists in Residence, such as the artist and architect Sarah van Sonsbeeck, visual artist and film director Gabriel Lester and photographer Jeroen Musch. Luc Deleu was the first Artist in Residence at the Academy of Architecture in the 2004-2005 academic year.
