The Amsterdam-based office Office Winhov, in collaboration with the Danish Gottlieb Paludan Architects, is renovating the monumental Amsterdam Amstel Station, commissioned by ProRail, NS stations and the City of Amsterdam.

No less than three speakers will paint a picture of the Amsterdam Amstel Station this evening. As an urban planner for the City of Amsterdam, Ton Schaap tells us about the significance of the Amstel Station and its surroundings for the city. Architect Jan Peter Wingender of Office Winhov speaks about the transformation of the station and Miguel Loos, consultant Bureau Spoorbouwmeester, dives into the transformation of monumental stations.

About the station

The Amsterdam Amstel Station designed by H. G. J. J. Schelling, J. Leupen and C. van Eesteren and was commissioned in 1939. The advanced design for that time, in which various traffic flows are optimally connected, is still working. The design in a classical-modern vocabulary is characterised by a succession of typologically recognisable spaces, each with its own light. The use of materials with brick, steel and natural stone is particularly rich at that time. The station is an important traffic junction and the connection to the rapid urban developments in the area and the renovations of the monumental building form the core of the task. On the historical east side, various adaptations are necessary and the building is gradually restored to its former glory. On the west side, the later added rear entrance will be replaced by a new station hall that incorporates itself in a contemporary way into the original design and gives the station a new face to the Amstel.
