Laura Gatti, landscape designer and co-designer of the multi-award-winning ‘Bosco Verticale’ by architect Stefano Boeri in Milan, shares with us the challenges, the failures and the successes of gardens integrated with buildings in her 1Lectures on 24 May.
A huge trend nowadays are tenders with renderings of buildings covered with plants and trees. As an agronomist, how does Laura Gatti shape the perfect condition for vegetation on balconies and roofs? At what stage in the design process does she come in? What are the selection criteria for the perfect plants and trees? And what did Laura learn from Bosco Verticale for future projects? Laura Gatti has been working for over twenty years in the field of urban regeneration and green area design in the public and private sectors. As a specialist in roof garden design, she works through diagnosis, remediation, impact studies, evaluation of stability of large trees. Her skills are in great demand for urban regeneration and designing parks and gardens integrated with buildings (roofs and green walls). In 1992 she founded Studio Laura Gatti, specializing in horticultural and soil consultancy, tree care and management plans, with special skills and experience in the restoration of historical sites and integrating greening into buildings – green roofs, green walls, hanging gardens.
