1·Lectures on the Amsterdam School: One Material

Thursday 14 April 2016, 20:00 - 21:30 hrs.
Academy of Architecture
Waterlooplein 211-213
1011 PG Amsterdam

2016 is the centenary of the Amsterdam School. The housing designed by the architects of the Amsterdam School ranks among the high points of Dutch architecture and can still be admired throughout the city. The architects’ use of brick and ornament, of the façade as a means of expression and the housing block as a defining element in the streetscape together form a public statement. There is now a clear reappraisal of these design choices, as regards materials, building and area development.

As part of this celebratory year, this 1·Lectures is devoted entirely to the Amsterdam School as a source of inspiration for today’s architects. The lecture will be preceded, at 16h00, by the opening at the Amsterdam Centre for Architecture of the exhibition ‘100 years of inspiration – the influence of the Amsterdam School on contemporary building’.

With: Arjen Hoogeveen (Hoogeveen architectural firm), Marlies Rohmer (Marlies Rohmer Architects & Urbanists), Machiel Spaan (M3H architects) and Rudy Uytenhaak (Rudy Uytenhaak architectural firm). Moderator is Petra Brouwer.

The lecture will be preceded, at 16.00, by the opening at the Amsterdam Centre for Architecture of the exhibition ‘100 years of inspiration – the influence of the Amsterdam School on contemporary building’.
