Helsinki: bijzonder egalitair

Afgezien van de nieuwe Balkanstaten is Finland een van de jongste landen van Europa, en dat laat zich zien in Helsinki. De ruime opzet van de straten doet grootstedelijk aan, maar het weefsel is divers en gevarieerd. Elke periode van buitenlandse overheersing liet zo zijn sporen na: de Russische megalomanie (zij bouwden de enige toren) bijvoorbeeld, en de Zweedse degelijkheid. Bij aankomst in Helsinki viel direct op dat wij een flink stuk noordelijker waren: de temperatuur was rond het vriespunt, met tegelijkertijd een kraakheldere, zuurstofrijke lucht – dat voelt erg gezond. De stad is niet erg groot en is daardoor prettig te bezichtigen. Helsinki ligt prachtig aan zee en al was het 's nachts flink koud, de zon zorgde overdag voor veel warmte. Net als Berlijn en Rotterdam heeft Helsinki een heterogene structuur, waardoor er zich telkens nieuwe stedelijke sferen aanbieden. Door het besef dat er zich boven Helsinki niet veel meer bevindt dan toendra's en de Noordpool, maakt de stad bijna per definitie intiem en veilig.

De wijk rondom het hotel was een uitgaanswijk, geknipt voor studenten. De stugge houding van de Finnen gaat steevast overboord na een paar glazen bier – er werd derhalve gefeest tot het ochtendgloren. De Finse begeleiders waren erg behulpzaam, en dat was prettig met het oog op het totaal onbegrijpelijke Fins, dat nauw verwant is aan het Hongaars en totaal niet te vergelijken is met Zweeds of Noors. Alles in Finland gaat rustig. En wat aanvankelijk stugheid lijkt, is in wezen Finse bescheidenheid. Uiteraard zijn Nederlanders altijd erg luid en duidelijk! Zo ook in de prachtige, uit rits gehouwen kerk, waar een buslading landgenoten luid begon te applaudisseren na het orgelspel.

De veelheid aan Finse modernistische architectuur is inspirerend. De bijna organische werken van bijvoorbeeld Aalto en Saarinen zijn goed over Helsinki verspreid, je komt ze overal tegen. Helsinki is een geweldige plek en het karakter van deze stad aan de zee is bescheiden maar genereus. De straat die wij onderzochten snijdt als een mes door al de periodes van Finse bezetting heen en kent veel verschillende stedenbouwkundige principes. Het bood daarom een zeer goede basis voor gesprekken met onze vriendelijke Finse begeleiders en medestudenten. De gezamenlijk atlas van de straat die wij produceerden was geslaagd in gelaagdheid en diversiteit. Genoeg basis voor verdere uitwerking tot projecten, al zijn er studenten uit de groep zo enthousiast over Helsinki dat ze nog voor de kerst terug willen.

Helsinki - Unioninkatu

With its population of 600.000, Helsinki is the main city in Finland. Lise Oslo and St Petersburg, it is also one of northern most cities in the world. Its geographical position with very cold winters, mild summers, long summer nights and short days in the winter creates a particular climate for a city and an intense and alternative use of the public space. Also the idea that the country does not really begin until after (or above) Helsinki, and grows more and more inhospitable, can almost be felt in the density of the centre of Helsinki.
The street that we are going to investigate and use as the pretext for fascination is called the Unioninkatu. This 2-kilometre-long street runs from the observatory to a park. It extends along a North-South axis with a considerable difference in level. It cuts through a series if different areas. During our workshop we shall try to find out what this street signifies in this city.

Assignment

The final assignment is up to you, since this workshop is about adopting a position vis-à-vis your own fascinations. However, that certainly does not mean that you can do whatever you like. It is about sharpening your personal fascination, making use of the fascinating and rich context of Helsinki in general and of the Unioninkatu in particular. It is about formulating a good assignment in order to subsequently elaborate it into a design that responds to the initial question of your fascination.

How are we going to do this in relation to Finland and Helsinki? First of all, we shall prepare the excursion together, since a well prepared journey is very important for the precision with which each of you can investigate your fascination. Second, during the first two weeks we will provide many lectures and input about research in urban design and architecture and how an idea and fascination can be elaborated to form a project. That means that we shall follow a dual trajectory in the weeks before the excursion. On the one hand, there is a joint research and input (we shall jointly put together an excursion guide). On the other, we shall already discuss your fascinations with each of you personally, using a format that we shall explain in the first lesson. As far as we are concerned, it is essential that personal fascinations can be optimally developed if reflection on them takes place in a broad context. That is only possible if you are very productive too. In addition, there are in this case the excursion to Helsinki and the research of the Unioninkatu. The challenge will be to link these different scale and mental levels together in an interesting way. We shall assist you in that and challenge yo to do it.
