Tectonics in contemporary brick architecture: Jan Peter Wingender

Jan Peter Wingender is the new lector on Material & Design at the Academy of Architecture. Within the international project An Exacting Material: Tectonics in Contemporary Brick Architecture, he conducted research, together with the students and assisted by architect Uri Gilad, on the current use of bricks in architecture.

Within the research group, Wingender wanted to understand the unique vocabulary of brick, together with students of the Academy. In essence, the research was focused on the forms of expression that the material offers and the underlying question of how and why architects apply it. A desired research result was a survey and diagnosis of the application of brick. According to Wingender, the Academy – with its concurrency education for designers by designers – is the designated place to gather knowledge about the material and its application, clarify meanings, talk, debate and reflect in order to help the tradition further. Moreover, the reciprocal influence of theory, practice and education is also possible.

On 17 February 2012, an interview with Jan Peter Wingender was published in the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant: 'De week van de baksteen’ (The week of the brick): Architect Jan Peter Wingender.'
