P.J.H. Cuypers and the Gothic rationalism: Aart Oxenaar

Aart Oxenaar, director of the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture, obtained his doctorate from the University of Amsterdam on 7 October 2009 with a thesis on P.J.H. Cuypers. At the same time, the publication ‘P.J.H Cuypers en het gotisch rationalisme. (P.J.H. Cuypers and the Gothic rationalism) appeared through NAi Uitgevers (NAi Publishers). Oxenaar’s proposition is that the works of Cuypers are more than a coincidental series of buildings: they form an oeuvre that lends expression to a socially engaged architectursl outlook, based on a ‘logical or rational design method’ borrowed from the Gothic: the Gothic rationalism.
