The Dutch landscape has been changing for centuries, not only influenced by wind, water and soil but also by human interventions. The Dutch landscape as it appears now is a primary cultural, manmade landscape, based on the strong need to protect the Netherlands from drowning and make it suitable for food production.

The fact that the Dutch created their own country already for centuries influenced the profession of landscape architecture a lot. This long tradition of landscape interventions, combined with the need to use the scare space carefully in a densely populated country, gave the Dutch landscape architects a strong position in the working field.

After a period of creating optimal circumstances food production, water safety and infrastructure, landscape architects are now facing new changes in their profession. Further urbanization, changes in agriculture, a stronger need of larger natural systems and the influences of climate change and energy transition ask for different approaches on a larger scale. In the meanwhile, the position of landscape architects is changing, and they need to develop a wider set of skills.

In her lecture Sylvia Karres will look back on the development of the profession of landscape architecture in her personal and international career. Working with strong personalities in the office of Bakker en Bleeker and in other multidisciplinary, often international teams, in her own office gave her the inspiration to put landscape architectural projects in a wider perspective and a higher level. Sylvia will speak about her experiences in different practices and her personal view on the assignments landscape architects are facing now.
