The Curaçao Medical Center opened its doors on November 15, 2019. A hospital that meets all international standards. At the same time it is a true Caribbean hospital. Architect Lyongo Juliana (director of the Caribbean Region at OZ) has been involved with the project since the first market consultation in 2011. OZ, in collaboration with EGM architects, designed this new general hospital for Curaçao assigned by Ballast Nedam International.
In his 1·Lectures at the Academy of Architecture on 20 February 2020, Lyongo Juliana will elaborate on the design as well as the realisation process.
Presuming that the wellbeing of a patient can contribute to the healing process, how do you design a hospital in a climate and culture that is unknown to most members of the design team? Willemstad is one of the 10 World Heritage sites of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The new hospital is built in the buffer zone of the World Heritage site. What implications did this have on the design? Building a hospital on an island that has never produced such a large building requires more than technical and aesthetic knowledge. What do you come across and how do you deal with it?
In addition, Lyongo demonstrates how the knowledge gained there is also relevant to the design issues that the city of Amsterdam now faces.
