Waterlooplein 211-213

This is de first of three 1·Lectures in this academic year on city architects, leading the development of three leading cities in Europe. First up is Tina Saaby, Copenhagens’ city architect from 2010 to 2019 and now an independent city maker and placemaker.

Copenhagens city architect is a free voice that advices and guides both politicians, administration and stakeholders in how to make good cities with architecture that has a positive impact on human beings. Tina Saaby will show examples of what has been built in the city and how the process and supervision is an important part of creating architecture that makes a difference.

Theme explained
Our European metropolises currently develop at high pace. Since the 1990s we experience a renaissance of these cities that before lost significant amounts of people to the suburbs. This newly gained momentum comes at a time, where not only the new residents need to be accommodated but where also paradigm shifts in urban planning and development take place. Technology allows us to steer the stocks and flows in cities in a much more detailed way. Climate change requires the rethinking of energy production and consumption, of how to deal with more extreme weather events and of how we live in cities in the future. Migration asks for a new social compact and local politics more and more focus on the quick gains and not the long-term strategic goals.

In this debate, sociologists, urbanists, economists, tech-Entrepreneurs, politicians and the ‘ordinary citizen’ all get their say to a bigger or smaller extent. But it is one group, that plays a crucial role: the city’s architect. While their titles, their legal power and the gravitas of the organisation they lead greatly differs, what unites them is that they are the spider in the web of urban development.
