Waterlooplein 211-213
1011 PG Amsterdam

For 13 years, Peter Salter worked on his magnus opus: four London townhouses in Notting Hill called Walmer Yard. During his 1Lectures on February 15th, Salter tells us all about the design and construction of the labyrinthine complex in which the British architect experiments with different ideas. The bulbous black cupboards, underfloor storage, black steel staircases and fold-down furniture are some of the unusual features that characterise the houses.

Peter Salter set up his architectural practice in 1982 after gaining experience at the architectural office of Alison and Peter Smithson. Salter’s architectural work has focused on cultural, residential and leisure projects, and included two commissions for International Expositions in Japan.

His teaching career began in the 1980s. In 1995 he was appointed Head of School and Professor of Architecture at the University of East London. His focus there was to develop a school with a specialisation in exploring architecture through construction, with an emphasis on materials as a way of engaging with issues of sustainability and low energy construction. In 2006, he was appointed Professor of Architect ural Design at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff.

In 2011 he was awarded Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects for his contribution to teaching and writing. He also received many awards.
