During her 1Lectures on 11 October, the French Catherine Mosbach talks about her work as a landscape architect. Using three projects with three different scale sizes, she explains her views on the landscape: a very small area, (1000m2) in Ulsan, South Korea; an intermediate size for the Louvre Lens Museum Park (25ha) and a large landscape for Phase Shift Park Taichung in Taiwan.

About Mosbach
After a career in biology, chemistry and physics,Catherine Mosbach changed course and started her studies at The Landscape Architecture School of Versailles. She graduated in 1987 and founded her Parisian studio, Mosbach Paysagistes, the same year. Due to her exceptional work, she received the highest and most important French award in 2016 from President Hollande. (Orde national de la Légion d’honneur). In 2018 Mosbach received a LILA Award (Landezine International Landscape Award) in the category Best Office. Jury members recognized Catherine Mosbach as an outstanding and talented creative force who pushes the profession beyond excellence, revealing hidden layers of designing and also thinking about landscape.

A glimpse into Mosbach’s thinking
Mosbach wants to make us aware of our physical relationship with the changing landscape:

“A landscape is not an idealised representation of a stable world. The design opens to all the fluid brewings of our planet, such as water, snow, wind, earth, light, impromptu sprouts etc. As an individual you place yourself in the middle of these brewings, during a walk or a meditation in the landscape. In this way you can become aware of the relationship between your own physical boundaries, your culture and the continuous formation of your being in contact with your immediate environment.

The design process must be open to the word of time and elements.  It is essential that we design with the thoughts of living processes in the landscape in order to make the visitor aware of the transience of the elements. Current technology tends to take us out of reality and drag us into virtual worlds without criticism, forgetting our own bodies and the relationship with the physical world.”
