Final presentation Winter School 2018

Silence is a topic that is increasingly fascinating to students. Tourism and urban densification are putting pressure on the city. We have laws regulating all kinds of rights, but how about the right to silence? Silence may seem desirable from a Western point of view, and yet some silences – like censorship – are to be feared. Perhaps the right to silence is also the right to speak sometimes.

The Amsterdam Academy of Architecture has invited artist Sarah van Sonsbeeck to be Artist in Residence (AiR) for the 2017-2018 academic year. She is asked to inspire students by her artistic research into silence by curating the Winter School. From 15 till 26 January Sarah will curate the Winter School 2018 during which students will be working on the assignment to design 'a silence' for the Kop van Java in Amsterdam. As one of Amsterdam’s few empty spaces, it has a great potential. Perhaps at such a point where it’s now silent, silence needs to be designed if we don’t want to lose it, but how?

On Friday January 26th at 14:h30 the final presentation of the Winter School 2018 will take place at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture. Come and see all the ideas, projects and solutions the students came up with. A special prize will be awarded by our external jury member Defne Ayas at the award ceremony at 15h30. Afterwards we hope you'll join us for a drink.
