1·Lectures | Towards Mapping Urban Intensities | Ilze Paklone

The Urbanism lectures in the 1Lectures series coming academic year are addressing the point at which Amsterdam is at the moment – moving from a mid-size city to a metropolis. This has consequences on all levels of urban development from intensity to resilience, from economy to democracy and culture. In four lectures under the titles ‘Intensity & Flexibility’, ‘Economy & Autonomy’, ‘Ecology & Sustainability’ en ‘Democracy & Variety’ we will explore – with the help of a wide range of esteemed urbanists from abroad – how other cities around the world have been addressing the issues arising and what solutions or ideas could serve as a source of inspiration and become guiding principles for Amsterdam.

As the first speaker on this subject, the originally Latvian architect and urban researcher Ilze Paklone tells us about the themes of intensity and flexibility, based on her experiences in Tokyo.

About Ilze Paklone
Ilze Paklone is a Latvia born architect, co-founder along with Rafael A. Balboa of “STUDIO WASABI”, an architecture office and think-tank based in Tokyo. She holds a PhD from Riga Technical University and was doctoral student at the University of Tokyo under the fellowship granted by the Japanese Government Scholarship program Monbukagakusho. She has worked as an architect at design studios such as “Wiel Arets Architects” (NL) and “NRJA” (LV). She has been correspondent based in Japan for Italian magazine “DOMUS” and guest editor for the Japanese magazine “a+u” special issue “Feature: Latvia – Architecture Unfolding”, as well as co-curator for the exhibition “Latvia. Architecture at Convergence” showcased in Japan.
