Design, invent & fabricate – Why architecture always should boil

In this last 1Lectures of the fall season, architect and founder of bureau SLA, Peter van Assche, speaks about circular architecture, cuddly sustainability, and new societies. He will illustrate his story with the housing project Bosveld in Almere Oosterwold, a selfmade plastic factory, and a school building in Amsterdam (which is teaching material in itself). He will also talk about the design of the head pavilion of the Dutch Design Week, which will be constructed under the motto: 100% borrowed.

Almere Oosterwold, which spans 4300 hectares, is being developed in an organic way in an area where there is currently a polder. Southeast of Almere, between the A27 highway and artist Marinus Boezem’s cathedral forest, eighteen households built their own house after a design by bureau SLA and ZakenMaker – and they are working on a third project. The project started as an answer to the question: How can my friends and I live together nice and spaciously with lots of outdoor space, beneath the smoke of Amsterdam, and on a minimal budget?

The organisation of maximum circularity is always dependent on the context. Per location, bureau SLA continuously asks itself which design solutions can truly lead to an energy-friendly living environment. As such, the answer of bureau SLA and Overtreders W to the design of the main pavilion of Dutch Design Week – 100% borrowed – fits with the short-term use of the pavilion and the wish to pair a statement with a design that speaks to the imagination.

Architect Peter van Assche started out as information theoretician, and began a PhD at the Institute for Experimental Mathematics in Essen. There, he discovered that his creativity would be able to come into its own more through the design of buildings. In 2001, he graduated from the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam. He has been leading bureau SLA since 2002. It consists of a team of architects and builders, supported by architecture historians, landscape architects, and energy experts. Bureau SLA does not wait for commissions to come to them, but rather builds and develops in the city in an innovative way, from its own initiative and with its own manpower. With this trial and error mentality, the architects of bureau SLA discover the full potential of material use, energy, waste flows, smart living and working, and development processes.
