On Thursday 4 February, the Kleiburgflat in Amsterdam and its unique transformation will have the honour of being the first topic of discussion, with Hans van der Heijden, Kamiel Klaasse, Jan van Grunsven and Tom Avermaete.

Kleiburg was the very last original honeycomb-shaped block of flats in the Bijlmermeer neighbourhood. The characteristic building was on the demolition list, but has been granted a new lease of life as a so-called klushuizenproject (DIY-home project), a Dutch approach in which obsolete houses in deprived neighbourhoods are offered at low prices, on the condition that the buyer invests a certain amount in the house.

The architectural firm NL Architects has completely renovated the flat up to and including the front door, after which it is up to the buyers to refurbish the home further as they so wish. Architect Hans van der Heijden will discuss the differences between the new forms of approach of collective private commissioning practice in the Kleiburgflat and the current public housing renovation practice. Kamiel Klaasse of NL Architects will present the renovation of the Kleiburgflat and Jan van Grunsven will present a typological study into the Kleiburgflat and subsequently the refurbishment of his own apartment in the same building. Tom Avermaete, professor of design methods at Delft University of Technology, will assume the role of moderator during this evening.

The 1·Lectures take place at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture, Waterlooplein 213 in Amsterdam. They are held on a biweekly basis on Thursday evenings, starting at 20:00. All lectures are in English.

Advance tickets costing €5 are available online. In addition, tickets can be purchased at the door from 19:30 on the evening of the lecture itself (if available). Academy students are entitled to free admission on presentation of their student ID card.
